The Monthly MomentumLeading Beyond the Title: Strengthening Your Leadership SkillsBy Ercelene Kinnebrew, MBA, BSN, RN Northwest Kidney Centers, Motivational Contributor |
Leadership within dialysis care is not defined by a title or position, it is demonstrated through daily actions, influence, and initiative. Every technician and technologist plays a vital role in shaping patient outcomes, team dynamics, and the overall culture of safety and excellence.
Leadership is not just a title; it's about influence and initiative. Whether you are mentoring a new team member, speaking up for patient safety, or modeling accountability, your influence matters. Each interaction is an opportunity to lead, a moment of lasting impact.
But leadership is more than influence; it is also a responsibility. It is a commitment to use your voice, your actions, and your expertise in a way that strengthens your team, protects your patients, and elevates the standard of care. At the same time, it is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in ways that may never be formally recognized but are deeply felt. The way you respond to a challenge, support a colleague, or advocate for what is right can shape outcomes far beyond the moment itself.
Consider this: How do you show up when no one has given you the title of “leader,” but others are still watching, learning, and depending on you?
Leadership often lives in those unofficial spaces. The quiet moments when you choose integrity over convenience, courage over silence, and encouragement over indifference. These are the moments where true leadership is revealed.
Every day presents a choice: to simply perform tasks, or to lead through them. When you choose to lead with purpose, you don’t just complete the work, you influence culture, inspire trust, and leave a lasting imprint on those around you.
Positive leadership means using your voice and actions to:
- Promote a culture of respect and collaboration
- Advocate for safe, patient-centered care
- Encourage growth and continuous learning among peers
- Support solutions; not just identify problems
Every technician and technologist has the power to uplift the team environment and strengthen trust among colleagues and patients alike. Leading with integrity ensures that your impact builds confidence rather than confusion.
Over the next month I challenge you to take intentional steps to strengthen your leadership skills:
- Volunteer for a project lead role within your clinic, committee, or lead quality initiative improvement
- Complete a leadership workshop or training module to expand your knowledge and confidence
- Seek feedback from peers or supervisors on your leadership style and communication
- Commit to daily leadership affirmations, ( e.g. “I inspire others through my actions”)
These actions not only build your professional growth but can enhance the overall effectiveness of your team. Remember, your ability to influence others is a powerful skill. Be sure you are using influence with purpose!
“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” – John F. Kennedy
Time to Check-In! Did you think I forgot?
It is midyear and now is a great time to pause and reflect on your SMART goals:
- Are you making progress toward the goals you set at the beginning of the year?
- What strengths have you developed so far?
- Where can you refocus your energy in the coming months?
Small, consistent adjustments can make a significant difference by year-end. Recommit yourself to your goals and identify one meaningful step you will take this week.
